THE PRODUCTION OF APPEARANCE

GUEST LECTURE SERIES - SUMMER SEMESTER
Period: May - July, 2010
Conceived and organised by Nikolaus Hirsch and Johan Bettum
ABSTRACT
The Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC) presents its forthcoming public lecture series. The series commences in May, runs till July and is entitled, The Production of Appearance. The series has been conceived and is executed by Nikolaus Hirsch and Johan Bettum.
With The Production of Appearance we wish to address how contemporary architecture can be understood in terms of how it emerges in a critical public context. This context includes the way that architecture is mediated in printed and online media, but also the subtle and not-so-subtle means that architects engage with to manifest an identity for their buildings and transform formal and informal gestures into architectural qualities.
We hope that you would have an interest in contributing to our endeavour and would be delighted to host you in the Städelschule, one of the most prominent art academies in the world. The Städelschule Architecture Class offers a unique post-graduate Master of Arts programme in Advanced Architectural Design devoted to experiments and research in building design. It is run by Ben van Berkel and Johan Bettum and counts Beatriz Colomina, Mark Wigley, Sanford Kwinter and Jeffrey Kipnis to its regular faculty or guests.
Unless otherwise stated, the lectures take place in Städelschule Aula at 19:00
