The serpent, the swan, the leaf, the knife, the water, the fire, the air, the wind. The voodoo, the prayer, the chant, the bush, the bison, the horse hair, the worker, the hood. The warrior, the weekend, the war, the waiter, the towel, the gator. The birthright & the blood. The profit & the sight. The tithes & the offerings. The sacrifices of all kinds. The eclipses which obscure the stars which fade the truths of the myths into strange realms of rhythm language. Speaking of speaking in tongues as children groomed for bastardized for-profit pulpits landing inland in the violences of borrowed hostel beds embossed in US. The hospitality of branding hospitals. This life of last-minute cancellations, reservations upon “Reservations”, & constant borders. Life is not only cyclical but increasingly surveilled. Revelations warns of plagues, gossip & rumor, warns of women, warns of this the weightless inner space which invents in the midst of chaos. These life-ways are sacred to the histories & lands of which (we) are derived, this world of smoke & expense built on the vivisection of its myriad islands like so much ceviche. “It’s all for the game, it’s all for the lovers trying to take their breath away”.
“holy terrain” is the third in a programme of exhibitions at the Goethe-Institut, Dublin entitled “The German School”. The series is an initiative of Professor Gerard Byrne and the Film Class at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main and the Goethe-Institut Irland.
In this exhibition of sculptural works of mixed media, experimental painting & hybrid-net, Rashiyah Elanga, Jordan/Martin Hell, Hemansingh Lutchmun & Maximiliano Siñani declare (or don’t) customs of a collective imaginary, embodied by a kind of entangled metamorphosed non-western transcendentalist actualizing.
The four artists from Städelschule have joined with Dublin-based artists Anishta Chooramun and Osara Azams, and curator Beaulah Ezeugo to make this collaborative exhibition of works that seek to explore their various practices in relation to the intersections within their histories. The exhibition is accompanied by a zine and e-pub publication that encapsulates their collective speculative points of inquiry and animates their work as always fragment, always —part.
These artists seek to mine & misremember an occult of how romantics can or can’t language— & how failed mechanics of subjectivity, objectivity, & reconstruction are a social vectoring of “our world-work”; a fugitive necro(narco)-politics of insurgency & inception. Opening night will culminate in a launch of the zine and a musical trio performance by Osaro of Fried Plantains Collective, Karen Miano of Origins Eile, and Cami.
