On the occasion of her solo exhibition at Portikus, Hajra Waheed will discuss her multi-channel musical composition and sound installation: Hum. Her lecture will briefly outline the specific histories that instigated and inspired the creation of this work. She will also speak to the importance of music and the large role it has played in conveying stories of resistance around the globe, with a focus on the ubiquitous yet overlooked medium of humming, exploring it as a language of resistance. The lecture will conclude with a brief Q&A with Christina Lehnert, the curator of Portikus.
Hajra Waheed’s multidisciplinary practice ranges from painting and drawing to video, sound, sculpture and installation. Some of the Issues explored in her work include the nexus between security, surveillance and the covert networks of power that structure lives. Hajra Waheed’s work also addresses the traumas and alienation of displaced subjects affected by legacies of colonial and state violence. Characterized by a distinct visual language and unique poetic approach, her works use the ordinary as a means to convey the profound, and landscape as a medium to transpose human struggle and a radical politics of resistance and resilience.
