In addition to the free artistic work in the studios, the core of the teaching is the study in the classes, which are each led by a professor and in which the students study together. This is accompanied by a varied curriculum of theoretical lectures, seminars, guest lectures and practical courses offered in the workshops.
Applicants should have sufficient language skills in English and German. All courses and class meetings are held in English. A language certificate in German or English is not required.
The Städelschule does not offer scholarships or financial support for students. We recommend that all accepted applicants immediately apply for a student visa to enter Germany. Experience has shown that making appointments at embassies or consulates for visa matters as well as processing an application are time-consuming and can take 3-4 months after the first appointment.
The exact conditions for applying vary from country to country. Therefore, we recommend that you contact the German embassy in your home country as early as possible to find out about the current wait times and the exact procedure for obtaining a student visa in order to find out which documents are required.
For a visa, please submit your application with all required documents at least four months before your planned entry. Complete the entire application form in duplicate. Submit the application form with all required documents in duplicate to the embassy or consulate.
The following list is not complete, but gives an indication of the documents you will need to apply for a student visa:
A valid health insurance is mandatory for studying in Germany. Applicants from non-EU countries must present proof of health insurance within the first four weeks of taking up their studies. Students from countries with which Germany has concluded a social security agreement with an insurance clause can continue to be insured with the insurance company in their home country during their stay in Germany.
The Städelschule does not offer scholarships or financial support for students. There are many ways to finance your studies in Germany. The estimated cost of living is approximately 950 € per month. Many students work a part-time job in addition to their full-time studies. Some use the possibility to finance their studies with the help of scholarships. We recommend that foreign students who have not yet started their studies apply for a scholarship from the DAAD Scholarship database - DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service.
