Due to the loss of touch caused by the risks associated with it in our current moment, the political and ethical implications of this sense become noticeable. Life unfolds within manifold encounters that often elude control. Touch is a basic condition of our vulnerable existence, pointing toward mutual dependencies, porous bodily boundaries, brutal intimacies, as well as cross-species collaborations.

If we consent to not being a single being (Fred Moten), how does that change the way we write, compose, rehearse, perceive, perform, and institute? How has touch been understood in the arts, particularly in the context of performance? How do we negotiate relations of proximity and distance in the spaces we share? And how can we approach as well as affirm the performativity and mediality of touch?

The online research group h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s meets weekly to explore these and other questions in an informal setting, initiating a conversation among artistic, theoretical, and activist practices, where touch is understood as a contact zone among different organs, senses, and media.

h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s t alternates between facilitated and open research sessions to encourage and accommodate different forms of research, conversation, and exchange.

h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s is initiated by Sofie Luckhardt, Anneliese Ostertag, Belle Santos, and Rahel Spöhrer and hosted by FFT Düsseldorf

h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s – facilitated research Sessions

For the h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s – facilitated research sessions, we invite practitioners to share works in progress, questions, and individual research on touch, intimacy, and haptic aesthetics (Laura M. Marks). The forms and durations of the meetings will vary according to the respective hosts, topics, and practices, and will be announced individually. For some sessions preparation will be necessary and research material will be sent out beforehand.

h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s – open research Sessions

The h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s – open research sessions provide a space for shared  readings, reflections, individual initiatives, pre- and post-discussions of individual as well as collaborative research endeavors.
