Karl Kliem has been the Leader of the Städelschule's new production studio, which is being realized on the Daimlerstraße site since October 2021. While still studying product design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach, he founded the media lab MESO together with colleagues, whose declared goal was to work in the field of digital media both artistically and commercially. Under the name Dienststelle he focused on his own artistic works, music visualizations and helped musicians and artists to realize digital projects. His works are often abstract and minimalist, sometimes ironic and self-referential. He has a keen interest in new technologies, where he focuses on sustainability and data privacy. Musicians he has collaborated with include Atom™, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jan Jelinek, and Mouse on Mars. Artists he collaborated with are e.g. Rosa Barba, Tobias Rehberger and Michael Riedel. Performances and exhibitions were shown at ZKM: Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Karlsruhe; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Barbican Centre, London; Philharmonie Luxembourg, International Design Conference, Aspen and the Tokyo International Forum, among others.
