The Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC) has been an accredited masters programme since 2006 and is taught in a dedicated building at Dürerstraße 24. The focus of SAC teaching is on architectonic design and innovative experiments. The architecture class gives consideration to broad political and social contexts and is devoted to exploring current cultural issues.
The Städelschule Architecture Class offers three different masters thesis studios run by professors and visiting faculty: advanced architectonic design (AAD), architecture and aesthetic practice (AAP) and architecture and urban design (AUD). These academic areas with different emphasis complement one another, contribute to the dynamic concept behind the programme and encourage exchange and discussions between students and teachers. The students conclude their architecture class studies in the third and fourth semesters by choosing one of three possible specialisations.
When Johann Friedrich Städel established the Städel Institute in 1817, he conceived of art and architectonic education being taught together. Today the Architecture Class continues to benefit from the academy's critial discourse at large. The teaching of the Städelschule Architecture Class is supported by an active lecture program to ensure that it remains comprehensive, diverse and challenging.
