From Black to Schwarz: A Transatlantic Exchange

Workshop
November 4–6 2024
I.G.-Farben-Haus, Campus Westend, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main 

In 2022/23, the artist James Gregory Atkinson, invited by Antje Krause-Wahl (Studiengalerie 1.357 and Heisenberg Professorship for Contemporary Art History, Goethe University, Frankfurt), discussed Black and queer perspectives on German history, politics, and culture with students and international guests as part of the seminar Germans are Black! - Fascists Cannot Be Germans (German title: Deutsche sind Schwarz! - Faschisten können keine Deutschen sein). In order to develop critical strategies for addressing hegemonic historiographies in archives of memory culture. This event will now be continued in collaboration with one of the previously invited guests, Priscilla Layne, in the form of a workshop from November 4–6, 2024. The course will mainly be held in english. 

The workshop is open for all students and is part of the courses offered by the Studiengalerie 1.357 at the Research Center of Goethe University. The Studiengalerie 1.357 is a teaching and study project at the Research Center for Historical Humanities at Goethe University. It presents four exhibitions each year, developed by students from various academic disciplines. 

Participation Requirements: 

  • Attendance and active participation in group work and discussions. 
  • Credit options include: participation certificate or exam (Essay, 1,000-3,000 words), depending on the individual credit options within the degree modules.
