Archive

The Archive provides a rich resource for study on Städelschule’s institutional history and Portikus’ past exhibitions and publications. Holdings include numerous documents, correspondence, ephemera, audio, photographic, and video documentation, and publications.

Due to the change of sponsors over the history of Städelschule, the archival holdings main parts are distributed among three different institutions in Frankfurt, Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Städel Museum, and Städelschule. In addition, further material is in the Hessisches Landesarchiv in Wiesbaden and the Bundesarchiv in Berlin.

Since 2021, one of the Archive’s main initiatives is the Digitalization of holdings covering the period 1920 to 1950. The project was reviewed and prepared as part of the successfully completed feasibility study. In 2022 an application to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) has been submitted for the implementation of the digitization project, which is currently pending approval.

Portikus has been an integral part of Städelschule’s mission and its public programs. In the Archive, the Portikus Files include materials on over 230 exhibitions and events organized since 1987. The inventory includes photos, publications, editions, and correspondence between artists and curators, among others.

Städelschule observes the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Click here for further information
