ART ANTWERP 2022

15 – 18 Dec 2022

For this second edition of Art Antwerp, L21 presents “We are still on the road”, a project in which different visual languages co-exist around ideas of travel, movement and traces. The participating artists are: Jordi Ribes (1972, Barcelona), Stephen Felton (1975, Buffalo, New York), Alejandro Leonhardt (Puerto Varas, Chile, 1985), Vera Mota. (Porto, 1982), Renata de Bonis (1984 São Paulo, BR), Geran Knol (1991 Makkinga), Ian Waelder (Madrid 1993) and Lydia Gifford (1979, London).

Cormac McCarthy’s writing in The Road devotes the minimum number of functional signs to describe the efforts of a father and son to survive after an unspecified Apocalypse in an inhospitable, depleted, exhausted world. Gray ash and a road to travel south. In his story there is no information, not a single word, that exceeds what is strictly necessary to the development of the text; as if he wanted to ‘go to the bone’, to show us only the essential. “I just keep going”.

In the same way, the participating artists show possible ways to keep going, by advancing in their respective practices along research lines based on movement and linear patterns, as in the works by Felton and Knol, travel and corporality in the paintings by Ribes, Renata and Gifford, fragments and traces in the sculptural proposals of Mota, Leonhardt and Waelder.
