Since 2017 basis e.V. has been working with Lostgens Kuala Lumpur and the Goethe-Institut Malaysia as part of the AIR_Frankfurt artist residence programme.
The evening will provide an opportunity to get to know this year's scholarship holders and gain insight into their projects as well as into the art scene of Kuala Lumpur.
Helmi Azam Aris is currently a guest from Kuala Lumpur who lives and works at basis e.V. Frankfurt for three months. Azam Aris graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons.) from UiTM Shah Alam. Since then he has constantly expanded his practice and experimented with various media including painting, photography, fabric, sculpture, drawing, installation and art performance. In his work he combines a dark visual language with his personal experience as a Malaysian artist. In mid-December he will be showing works created in Frankfurt in a final exhibition at basis Projektraum.
The Frankfurt based artist Sarah Schoderer has just returned from her stay at lostgens' in Kuala Lumpur. She sees herself as a conceptual artist with a strong focus on visual forms and especially on painting. To do this, the artist first takes the position of an observer who collects impressions like a "sponge" and then processes them artistically. Based on this approach, the artist showed an installation of drawings at lostgens' in Kuala Lumpur, in which she reflects on her experiences and observations during her stay.
The talk will take place in English at basis, Gutleutstr. 8-12.
The Artist-in-Residence program AIR_Frankfurt was founded in 1990 by the Kulturamt Frankfurt and has been supervised by basis since 2016.
