The Compound House Gallery is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition, CHRIS-SIS: “FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART”, a solo exhibition displaying a new body of work by Samuel Baah Kortey, the second of his CHRIS-SIS series curated by Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson.
Samuel Baah Kortey expansively explores themes of sacred religious practices, folktales, rituals, theology and issues around animal cruelty. His work alludes to a perceived commercialisation of religious iconography and memorabilia especially within the catholic church, its sacristy and questions the aura of these objects, spaces and holy figures. Within his works are an assemblage of fictional characters composed of animals, humans and objects. His blood and resin casts address the hyper-visibility of the Christian crucifix and Christian iconography within the urban landscape of Kumasi.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart exhibition poster is created by the artist, Bright Ackwerh.
ABOUT COMPOUND HOUSE GALLERY
Compound House is an artist-run gallery dedicated to supporting and promoting the contemporary art practices and projects of Ghanaian artists. Foregrounding experimentation and stimulating our artists’ political sensitivity, the gallery positions itself as a space to test new strategies and engage off-grid interventions.
The Gallery boasts of a rigorous curatorial program led by Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson, an artist/ curator who has an independent practice into post-producing food and non-human agency in artistic production; which is profoundly influenced by the emancipatory teachings of the pedagogue and polymath, karî’kạchä seid’ou.
Founded by Nuna Adisenu-Doe, an artist and member of the Asafo Black collective and art market researcher, he holds a BFA in Painting from KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana and an MA in Art Market Appraisal (Professional Practice) from Kingston University, London after which he worked under the close direction of Pascale Revert of the 50 Golborne Gallery in London, UK.
The gallery is currently located at Untamed Empire, a cultural hotspot and multi-functional creative space in Accra. A concept space realised through up-cycling shipping containers into make-shift pop-up spaces and a communal space for creatives in the country’s capital, Untamed Empire is at the heart of forging creative cultures and experiences in Ghana.
