intimate yell as a title is lifted from the introduction of The Collected Works of Frank O'Hara (1995). Across two floors of Schinkel Pavillon the evening features performances by artist Olga Hohmann and Courtesy, who has assembled a choir to perform Gossip II (intimate yell). The performances are followed by DJ sets by Courtesy and French musician and producer Klō, a close collaborator of the artist, who features on multiple songs on intimate yell.
In the game called gossip, or telephone, what is whispered in someone’s ear to another is told to another, who tells another, and it is eventually spoken out loud. Stories which are told in one ear transform while translated through the subjectivities of others. For the performance Gossip II (intimate yell) Courtesy has invited Ronja, Olga Hohmann, Klō, Yves B. Golden and Hannah Endrulat to reinterpret four songs from intimate yell, adding another layer to the experience of the album and the onion of authorship.
intimate yell is stylistically lifted from the Danish artist’s current DJ endeavors. Over nine songs Courtesy offers various underground genres of dance music, spanning from deconstructed deep house, 2-step, 90s IDM and ambient. All the music is written and produced by Courtesy, recorded in her art and music space Studio Vestbirk in Berlin. The album features collaborations with a row of different singers and musicians; singer/producer Klō, actor Aaron Altoras, and with song lyrics and poems commissioned from art critic Geoffrey Mak and artist Sofia Defino Leiby. intimate yellis accompanied by a 12-minute video collage. The footage, which indirectly corresponds to the music, consists of photos, video interviews and moving images, recorded in a collaborative process where the video is made by – and portraying – a row of young contemporary artists; Laura Schaeffer, Arthur Chrusz, Olga Hohmann, clara sartor, Klō (who also co-authored and sings on the first single My Dazed Friend ) amongst others.
The vinyl artwork is made by Courtesy and consists of screen printed collage, made with stills from the video work intimate yell, mixed with images from Courtesy’s collection of dance music CDs from the 90s and 2000s. Images used are by Laura Schaeffer, clara sartor, liz and Scooter.
