Schemes of an Hour is a choreography for three dancers and a violin player set at the liminal time of dusk. It is an ode to dance as an abstract form, a force that is equally beautiful as it can be destructive, and an occasion for gathering in the seasonal spirit of La Rentrée.
Initially conceptualised for the garden of the Städel Museum, the piece unexpectedly found itself without a venue due to unforeseen circumstances. Yet art needs context or else it is simply a pissoir in the corner, and people dancing in public spaces are easily considered lunatics. Jean-Claude Maier Gallery came in quickly and with a lot of generosity to give Schemes of an Hour a context and allow it to be shared with the loose sociability it initially wanted.
