The extensive solo exhibition by Toni Schmale comprises a selection of existing works as well as works produced especially for the show. Her large-format steel sculptures can be considered as both highly aesthetic and technically perfected forms as well as reflexive elements that confront viewers with their own physicality.
Her works allude to bodies and become bodies themselves in the exhibition space. By altering and rewriting existing categories such as hard and soft, inside and outside, visible and invisible, the sculptures reveal the relational nature of these states. Moreover, they propose a shift and complication of representative logics of physicality and sexuality.
At basis e.V., her sculptures are conceived as abstract representatives of body-political discourses and enable reflection on social and gendered processes of formation and transition. They thus engage in a field of feminist criticism of normative concepts of the body, binary gender systems and heteronormativity.
The exhibition is curated by Carlotta Döhn.
Sponsored by Kulturamt Frankfurt and Hessische Kulturstiftung.
