With POPE.L: Between A Figure And A Letter, the Schinkel Pavillon presents the first, long overdue solo exhibition of the exceptional US artist Pope.L in Berlin. Contraption, a new site-specific installation, alludes to the ongoing debate surrounding the Humboldt Forum (a tawdry remake of the old Prussian royal castle in direct neighborhood of Schinkel Pavillon). Over the entire exhibition period performers bring Contraption to life via the periodic feeding of thousands of wooden models resembling the much-disputed castle. Bit by bit the octagonal exhibition space drowns in a flood of wood chips under the piercing noise of the monstrous apparatus.
Playing with multifaceted references, Pope.L continues his years-long preoccupation with forms of racist violence and social inequality. Mercilessly, he shows the destructive power of these structures, which permeate all layers of our social lives.
