Tales of Water and Sand

Nathalie Grenzhaeuser & Stefanie Zoche

Opening: Wednesday, October 11, 2023, 7 pm
October 12 – November 26, 2023

MaximiliansForum
Passage für Kunst und Design
Maximilianstraße 38
Maximiliansstrasse underpass, corner of Altstadtring tunnel
80539 München

In the expansive installation that the two artists Stefanie Zoche (Munich) and Nathalie Grenzhaeuser (Berlin) have conceived for the Maximiliansforum, they enter into a dialogue. In the juxtaposition of their works, a place between laboratory, archaeological excavation site and workshop is created that enables a multi-layered reflection on the complex relationship between man and nature.

Nathalie Grenzhaeuser's photographic works and video installations address the subarctic marine space and its scientific exploration. Her current works were created between 2018 and 2021 at the marine biology research station White Sea Biological Station Kartesh in Karelia, Russia. Starting from the marine space as the origin of life, she engages with the marine world and research routines from a micro- and macro-perspective.

In her sculptural works, Stefanie Zoche deals with the raw material sand, which has become a dwindling resource due to its mass use in the construction industry. The production of concrete also causes up to eight percent of global CO2 emissions. Stefanie Zoche has developed a cement-free, sustainable alternative that can also use desert sand, which is unsuitable for classic concrete. With her innovative sand bricks, she is concretely addressing the need for a future-oriented civilisation based on ecological principles.

Tales of Water and Sand was funded by Verbindungslinien from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
