The Young Is Night

Bonny Poon at ART-O-RAMA Marseille

Victoria Colmegna
Jacqueline Fraser
Cédric Rivrain
Louis Thillaye

Opening August 30, 2019
30 August to 1st of September 2019

The Young Is Night brings together the works of Victoria Colmegna (AR), Jacqueline Fraser (NZ), Cédric Rivrain (FR), and Louis Thillaye (FR). An inversion of the idiom, “The Night Is Young”, the title conjures a heady whirlwind of nonsense, of enigma standing in for identity in the intoxication of the after-hours. Here, in the night, the threshold between life and death thins.

Fraser will present excerpts from The Making of Dressed to Kill 2019 (2019), a large-scale installation and collage series. The Making of Dressed To Kill 2019 confronts the racial and sexual politics of recent and historical French pop culture, while reimagining Brian de Palma’s cult erotic thriller.

Colmegna will partake in ART-O-RAMA’s residency this summer to investigate the history of the Tarot de Marseille, the original deck used for divination. Colmegna posits Tarot as, essentially, “the art of conversation.” Tarot’s symbolism is a conduit for spiritual meaning, and its interpretation is co-produced in a social moment. Also on exhibit from Colmegna are custom-made dresses that replicate looks from Princess Diana’s wardrobe during her pregnancy in the 1980s.

Rivrain will present oil paintings from his series, Nuits.

Thillaye will show a photograph taken at Oxford. Students rest casually against gravestones while workers mingle in the backdrop.
