The artistic oeuvre of Tina Kohlmann is multi-faceted and covers all kinds of media and techniques. Her works represent a world of fashion and costumes, ethnological artefacts, nature and science and move between object and metaphor. Kohlmann is in search of the transcendent that exceeds form and substance. With simple means she produces works of art, which refer to the past and at the same time ask fundamental questions in aesthetics, nature and science. Most of the exhibits oscillate between cultural artefact and scientific find. They are curiosities that seem to lack any classification. This unstructured side-by-side of curiosities from nature and art reminds us of the Renaissance’ cabinets of curiosities or cabinets of wonder in which naturalia, mirabilia, artefacta, scientifica, antiquites and exotica are joined as an entity. Kohlmann’s work is a similar conglomeration and the observer gets to find fantastical, scientific, allegorical, esoteric and mystical elements as well as references to cultural history.
