A discussion about the housing crisis with Förderverein Roma e.V., Frankfurt am Main, activists from the housing project Habersaathstraße, Berlin, as well as representatives of the city governments of Frankfurt and Berlin - moderated by Arts of the Working Class and Synnika.
In December last year homeless activists occupied the vacant former Charité nurses' home on Habersaathstraße in Berlin Mitte for the second time - with success. The owner had originally planned to demolish the post-war apartments in order to build luxury condominiums. Now the building is being communalized and transformed into a self-managed housing project by the formerly homeless activists. The occupation is supported by social workers who have already set up an open counseling center in the building.
The Förderverein Roma e.V. has been calling for a house for Roma in Frankfurt am Main for years. In Frankfurt, migrants from Eastern Europe are particularly affected by homelessness. Due to the Corona pandemic, the previous accommodation measures in mass shelters pose a particular risk. Concrete alternatives are therefore more than urgently needed also in Frankfurt, where vacancies of office and store buildings are strongly increasing, especially in the inner city area.
In this situation of urgent housing emergency we will talk with the invited activists as well as representatives of the city governments of Frankfurt and Berlin about possible and necessary countermeasures.
The discussion will take place online and in German - with English translation, if required. The link to the event can be found on the event date at www.synnika.space.
