The Penetráveis are spectacular room installations created by the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica in the 1960s and ’70s. They are experimental spaces that are only activated when used. Oiticica thus invented a format that continues to offer new potential for artistic interventions to this day. How does a Penetrável differ from other temporary exhibition formats? What challenges does it pose to curators? The first part of the book revolves around the political and artistic requisites for the Penetráveis. The second part explores the possibilities they offer today – based on the performance and film programme that took place as part of the Hélio Oiticica retrospective staged by the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.
