Race, Culture, History

In times of a serious wave of racist social movements, new analyses of how to understand the new narratives of racism, the forces that feed the persistence of racism, as well as the search for more effective solutions are indispensable. In this year‘s Adorno Lectures Linda M. Alcoff presents a new perspective, bringing Race, Culture, History in a complex interplay.

The three lectures focus on the idea as well as the experience of race and of having a racial identity. They explore the constitutive relationship of racial identities to particular histories and cultures and argue that the problem of race is not primarily a problem concerning a faulty concept or a set of false beliefs, but a problem of colonial histories and their approach to cultural difference. Moving from the language of race to a greater focus on historical formations of race, the way in which racial identities are connected not simply to ideas but to associated practices and ways of life gets visible. These practices include those made possible by state policies but also include practices of resistance or disobedience that have taken both regressive and progressive forms.

In linking race to everyday practices of daily life, Linda M. Alcoff finds resources for opening up new possibilities for social transformation.

Linda Martín Alcoff ist Professorin für Philosophie am Hunter College und dem Graduate Center der City University of New York. Für ihre 2006 erschienene Publikation Visible Identities. Race, Gender and the Self (Oxford: Oxford University Press) erhielt sie den Frantz Fanon Preis der Caribbean Philosophical Association. Seit 2002 veranstaltet das Institut für Sozialforschung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Suhrkamp Verlag jährlich Vorlesungen, die an drei Abenden an Theodor W. Adorno erinnern. Dabei geht es ganz ausdrücklich nicht um eine Ausdeutung seines Werks, sondern darum, die lebendigen Spuren seines interdisziplinären Wirkens in der Philosophie, der Literatur-, Kunst- und Sozialwissenschaft sichtbar zu machen und auf diese Weise seinen Einfluss auf die heutige Theoriebildung in den Humanwissenschaften zu fördern.
