In November 2024, transmediale invited artist Hassan Khan to screen his 2010 films, The Dead Dog Speaks and Jewel as part of the 2025 festival. Khan responded that he would not be able to participate or have a conversation unless the festival expressed its willingness to respond critically to the current German context; where the persecution of voices that express solidarity with Palestine is actively being exercised. Over the weeks that followed, the invitation developed into a generative, ongoing conversation between the artist and the festival curators, Elise Misao Hunchuck and Ben Evans James around what meaningful action could be taken by a German institution. These conversations resulted in our joint decision to share Archive of Silence – Cancellation & Silencing Public List. This crowd-sourced list details over 200 acts of cancellation by German institutions, silencing artists, thinkers, and others for expressing solidarity with Palestine.
The archive exists in two forms across the festival. The first is a link to the archive, which can be found at the link below. The second is a film screening of the archive at the festival on February 2, 2025, at 18:00 CET in the Safi Faye Saal at HKW, Berlin.
