A cloud of dust rises from the corner, as if a brick wall, fallen, had released its potential energy before laying down to rest for centuries to come. Everything was at the brink. Everything was at the edge. The hottest summer ever recorded. The coldest winter yet to come. Desolation had struck the city like a torrential stream, ripping everything apart. I looked at my hands in the puff of dust, catching trickles of light through holes in the buildings. The wrinkles of my skin dactilar mirages. I noticed a large scar on my finger, already well into healing, beginning to confuse with the many other imprints my hands had received. Only us, the distracted few were left. Us that diverted from the mainline. Only us could bare this abandonment. The rest had gone onwards.
