Liesel Burisch's How to Care Summit is an event designed to deepen our understanding of infant care through a comprehensive and inclusive approach. Divided into three distinct but interconnected segments, the Summit offers a holistic approach to understanding and improving care dynamics in different settings. Both theoretical and practical aspects will be considered.
Emphasizing the need for inclusion, the How to Care Summit is explicitly for everyone, regardless of gender identity or caregiving experience. By emphasizing the importance of a place for everyone, the summit addresses potential biases and fosters a supportive atmosphere for diverse expressions of care.
11:00-13:30 Infant Care Workshop: Breastfeeding for All
The Summit will begin with an infant care workshop dedicated to all aspects of infant feeding and care, specifically designed as a safe space for members of the LGBTQI+ community and their allies, friends and families (including older siblings and and children) is designed to learn and share knowledge about effective care practices. In addition to the practical aspects, the focus is also on the emotional and social dimensions of infant care. The aim of the workshop is to make quality nursing knowledge accessible and affordable, thereby addressing the financial barriers often associated with formal training in this area.
Please note that this workshop is for members of the LGBTQI+ community and their allies, friends and families (including older siblings and children).
Please register for the infant care workshop at yenikler@salzburgerkunstverein.at.
Please let us know if you have any limitations, challenges or special needs so that the workshop can be adapted accordingly.
The language of the nursing workshop is German, but will be translated into English for non-German speaking participants.
The material will be provided in both English and German. The course will not be documented or recorded.
13:30-15:00 Lunch break
The lunch break offers participants the opportunity to network, share experiences and discuss the morning's findings.
15:00-18:00 Panel discussion & lecture performance
In the afternoon, the summit will take the form of a hybrid panel discussion followed by a lecture performance. This part aims to challenge and reshape conventional structures and perceptions of infant care. Liesel Burisch will give the lecture performance, combining personal insights with broader social reflections. The discussion will focus on how intimate publics (according to Lauren Berlant) create a space where strangers can come together based on shared experiences and interests. This public discussion, open to all, is intended to foster a lively yet sensitive dialog about the complexities and vulnerabilities of infant care.
With Liesel Burisch, Vera Beloshitzkaya (Horizon Europe Push*Back*Lash project & University of Salzburg) and Dijana Simić (Center Interdisziplinäre Geschlechterforschung Innsbruck). Moderated by Mirela Baciak.

18:00 Book presentation
The day will end with the launch of Liesel Burisch's book Stillen für Alle, which is a manifesto for community-based infant care. This publication highlights how specific and detailed discussions about infant care and feeding reveal broader, universally relatable themes.
Liesel Burisch (they/them) is an artist, writer and birth activist. Burisch's current interest is in hybrid gatherings around healing and celebration. Influenced by her work around birth and postpartum, Burisch explores the reconstruction, recontextualization and reinterpretation of rest as a form of collective healing from trauma and deprivation.
Vera Beloshitzkaya (she/her) is a research associate on the Horizon Europe Push*Back*Lash project, which investigates actors, attitudes, agendas and strategies that work against gender equality and democracy, and develops evidence-based strategies to counter this pushback. Beloshitzkaya is also the lead researcher on her early career fellowship "Families as Guardians of Democracy" at the University of Salzburg. She investigates how political parties promote and challenge the rights and interests of women and LGBTQI+ people. She also investigates how families and political heritage shape political and gendered attitudes. Prior to joining the University of Salzburg, Beloshitzkaya taught at Florida International University, FL, and was a dissertation fellow at the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University, MA. Her research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
Dijana Simić (she/her) is a literary and cultural studies scholar from Innsbruck whose research and teaching are transdisciplinary, moving between gender studies and Slavic studies. In recent years, she has been a member of the Americanist-Slavic affect research group "Intimate Readings" between the Universities of Graz and Erlangen-Nuremberg. This collaboration resulted in the anthology "Affective Worldmaking. Narrative Counterpublics of Gender and Sexuality" and the mini-series "Gender, Affect, and Politics" on the free radio station "Helsinki" in Graz. In addition to her work as a researcher and university lecturer, Dijana Simić is also a radio producer and translator from Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian into German.
