HazMatLab are Sandra Havlicek, Tina Kohlmann and Katharina Schücke. They have studied at Academy of Fine Arts Städelschule Frankfurt and live and work in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). In 2016 they joined their expertise to practise as a dynamic trio. They have spend the last two month as Artists in Residence at IAa Art Space on Jeju Island.
Isabell de Sena on HazMatLab in her text: Hwiz in the Chthulucene, 2017:
"Their works are composed not through autogenesis, but sympoietically[1] —through a symbiotic relationship between the materials and the artists: the co-dependent hexapod of this thriving affair. With the series of speculative fabulations that result, HazMatlab reveal themselves as makers and destroyers of the earth; explorative intruders of complex living systems which are brought to coexist as oddkin in a science-fiction/science fact. "
[1] Donna Haraway coins this term as an alternative to the “restrictive systems… and evolutionary theories called the Modern Synthesis” in which sciences of the Anthropocene are contained. Instead, sympoiesic knowledge practices are symbiogenetic, webbed and microbial (TTACC, p.8).
