Opening: 22 May 2025 at 7 pm
Exhibition: May 23 until August 3, 2025
Venue: basis e.V., Gutleutstraße 8-12, 60329 Frankfurt, Germany
For the exhibition Resonance of Absence, basis e. V. is presenting the vibrant, engaging and personal works of the Sudanese artist Amna Elhassan in a wide-ranging institutional solo exhibition concentrating on the years 2021–2025. Exhibited are works that were specially created for the show, alongside her most recent paintings that she produced as part of her scholarship from the Martin Roth Initiative in Frankfurt. They are brought in dialogue with some of her artworks that depict a time before the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023.
Elhassan’s paintings capture the beauty and value of fleeting moments. Her artworks relate to everyday life, moments of solidarity, and mutual support. By interweaving personal and collective accounts of flight and displacement, Elhassan’s works reflect on the war that has been taking place for two years. They are a reminder of the violence that people in Sudan are exposed to on a daily basis.
Resonance of Absence recognises the absent and is dedicated in particular to the resilience of women and all those who have lost their lives in the fight for a democratic society in Sudan. Their stories resonate in Elhassan’s works and can be perceived in the exhibition space.
