Originating from the classical Khmer dance, “Robam kbach boran”, Popil interprets the love story of two dragons anew: one representing Cambodia, the other China. The intricate and complex relationship of the two nations is mirrored in the fluid choreography. Concurrently, questions about cultural identity are addressed and made visible in the ambivalent symbolism of the dragon. Khvay Samnang is known for his research-based performances and installations which deal with the humanitarian and ecological impact of colonialism and globalisation. He is a former participant of the cultural programme at KfW Stiftung and took part in the Artist-in-Residence Programme in cooperation with Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, from 2014 until 2015. Additionally, works by Khvay Samnang from the collection of KfW Stiftung are presented on the first floor of the Villa 102.
As well, Khvay Samnang is showing the retrospective exhibition “Dancing the Land” (until 04.09.2022) at the ifa-Galerie, Stuttgart. Within this framework, Khvay Samnang will also show the performance Popil on 7 July in Stuttgart. The performances at both locations are a cooperation of KfW Stiftung and ifa-Galerie, Stuttgart.
