Last year, we celebrated Malmö Academy of the Arts’ 25th anniversary by publishing the book Trust - a Core Condition. It was produced by Malmö Art Academy with support from the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts. Due to the pandemic, we were not able to make a proper book release event. So, at the beginning of our 26th academic year, we decided to launch the book once more and add a new ‘chapter’ in the form of a symposium/webinar.

Malmö Art Academy in collaboration with Malmö Konsthall is organizing a symposium 23 September 2021 to discuss the future of arts education in light of different challenges in the field – both inside and outside the institutions. We are inviting practitioners in the field to bring together the rich experiences from the field of art and education.

Some of the issues that the symposium intends to address are: what kind of arts education will the future bring, when more and more art academies are becoming merged into large university campuses and structures? What does it mean for the education and the artists' role when studios are removed to make room for open workspaces? What can we learn from the independent art schools who have chosen to work outside institutional structures? Which ecosystems surround the Art Academies and how does it affect them? And would today’s youth feel that arts education is viable as a path forward now and in the future –even in a pandemic time?

Keynote speakers:

Ane Hjort Guttu (b. 1971) is a Norwegian artist and filmmaker based in Oslo. She works in a variety of media, but has in recent years mainly concentrated on film and video works, ranging from investigative documentary to poetic fiction. Among recurrent themes in her work are the relationship between freedom and power, economy and the public space, social change and limits of action. Guttu is also a writer and curator, and since 2016 Professor of Contemporary Art at the Oslo National Academy of Fine Art.

Dirk Fleischmann (*1974) is an artist and educator based in Seoul and Berlin. He completed his studies at the Städelschule art academy (Frankfurt a.M.) in 2002, and is the founder of RAT School of Art (Seoul). Until 2017 he directed the public program and created a non-academic thought sharing platform, as a space for talking about art. RAT nurtures self-learning and self-organization within an inspiring environment that invites to expand on artistic discourses.

Stine Hebert is an art historian, curator and educator based in Copenhagen. Hebert is currently
operating a freelance curator focused on investigating conditions of artistic production and
explorations of educational models. She has curated exhibitions for various spaces internationally and taught at universities and art academies in Europe. She has previously held positions as curator at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, (DK), curator at Malmö Art Museum (SE), Acting Director of BAC -Baltic Art Center (SE), Rector of Funen Art Academy (DK), and most recently Dean of The Academy of Fine Art at Oslo National Academy of the Arts (NO).

Dr. Temi Odumosu is an art historian, curator, and Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at Malmö University. She is author of Africans in English Caricature 1769-1819: Black Jokes White Humour (2017). Her research interests include colonial visual cultures and archives, postmemorial art and performance, ethics-of-care in representation, and critical data/digitisation practices. Overall, she is focused on the multitude ways art can mediate social transformation and healing. She is currently a member of the research network The Art of Nordic Colonialism: Writing Transcultural Art Histories.

Alumnus Speakers

Francis Patrick Brady is an artist that uses play and participation as strategies for creating installation, performance and workshops that challenge the existing rules and structures of our everyday reality. He is co-founder and curator at ‘Celsius Projects’ gallery in Malmö and co-organiser of the art collective ‘Union Group’ who have a focus on Roleplay, VR, consent safety, and immersive practices. He is associate lecturer at Chelsea College of Art at University of London and regularly teaches workshops at other art universities and institutions. He graduated from the MFA Critical & Pedagogical Studies at Konsthögskola Malmö in 2017

Max Ockborn works with sculpture, painting and text and allows the ordinary and fundamental to exist alongside one another with humour and tact. One important question in his practice is how sculptures, paintings and materials work together with us as humans and how we might come closer to a somewhat more social situation where the works aren't perceived as silent or non active. Ockborn Lives and works in Malmö. He got his master from Malmö Art Academy in 2012 and his master from the CPS-program of Malmö Art Academy in 2017. Participated also in the postgraduate program at Maumaus, Lisbon, in 2011.

Nina Jensen (b.1981) graduated from the MFA at Malmö Art Academy in 2012. She works with painting, installation and participatory art projects often on topics like nature vs civilization and post apocalypse. She is co-funder of FLOCK Platform for participatory art and has been working with pedagogical projects in several art institutions in Sweden.

Tina Helen holds an MFA in Critical & Pedagogical Studies from Malmö Art Academy and an MA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design. In her artistic practice she explores the complex relations between indignation and sympathy, discouragement and passion. Bringing together theoretical, practical and interpersonal understandings, she sets out to find spaces for sharing knowledge and visual language. Helen works individually and in collective constellations, in a variety of formats and contexts. The pedagogical plays a central role in her practice together with the urgency of autonomous learning and sharing processes.

Zahra Moein was born in Iran, 1993. She graduated with a master of fine arts at Malmo Art Academy Sweden and her bachelor was in photography from the Art University of Isfahan, Iran. She is a Fine Artist who is working mostly in two main mediums, photography and video and she is mainly working with archival footage and most of her projects are researchbased.

The symposium is held in English.

Malmö Konsthall is screening Ane Hjort Guttu’s film Manifest, 2020, between 16-23 September, and it is possible to watch the film 23. September at 9.00 in C-salen as a part of the symposium
