Beyond time and space stood a strange factory. Its walls were made of comics. Its chimney bore a gigantic flower. Its windows were shattered, and the blossom smelled of fresh paint and malice. As it painted the shimmering walls with shifting colors, it mocked the machines and commands. It was its own perfect canvas.

The space of brick and concrete, once built for steel and bolts, suddenly filled with bodies, lights, and music. Just as quickly as they appeared, they vanished before the blue light. Years later, deep inside, three men—of whom we encounter only one in the exhibition—pushed heavy planers. Bare-chested, they worked their way over the creaking wood of a floor in the apartment of a Parisian cloth merchant.
