Amy Ball’s new performance and video installation continues her current research into gendered codings of space and architecture. She looks at aesthetics and social rules of private, interior rooms as well as public, outdoor spaces, and selects characters and sub-communities that exist in between these divisions. She unpacks traditionally male aesthetics such as modernist architecture, motorbikes or mechanics as constructed expressions of masculinity. For "Women", Ball presents a new video piece shot in Canada’s remote Yukon territory, where she grew up. The video pairs the region’s expansive landscapes with a masked and anonymous dirt-biker. The rider’s relationship to the natural terrain forms the backdrop to Ball’s layering of language and sound in her live performance.
