Städelschule seeks new Rector

Application deadline: October 20, 2019

The Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main was established in 1817. The school offers degrees in Fine Arts, Architecture, and Curatorial Studies, features an international team of acclaimed faculty and staff, and attracts a diverse student body. The Städelschule’s exhibition space, Portikus, was founded in 1987. Today, it is widely known as a prominent center for contemporary art, exhibiting both emerging and established artists from around the world.

We are currently seeking a charismatic and communicative Rector, who has successfully led an art institution in the past or has otherwise shown distinctive leadership in the field of contemporary art. The Rector of the Städelschule is expected to live in Frankfurt and their appointment is scheduled for April 1, 2020.

An ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of contemporary art, broad curatorial experience, a positive dedication to higher education, and has an established position within the international art world. We are looking for a confident, open-minded art world professional, with a compelling and long-term vision for both the Städelschule and Portikus.

Accordingly, they must have the necessary managerial and social skills to publicly represent the school, lead an eminent team of professors and staff, and maintain an open dialogue with the students. These qualities are key to the daily functioning and running of the academy. A proven track record in acquiring public and private funding, as well as an excellent command of both German and English are essential.

The Städelschule is an equal opportunity employer, values diversity, and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for its students and employees. The requirements for employment listed in § 62 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz apply. This position is initially limited to a term of five years with the possibility of extension. Remuneration is defined by the salary grade W L2 (Federal State of Hessen).

Candidates are invited to submit their applications and relevant documents no later than October 20, 2019. Applications must be submitted via email to
