This lecture will focus on the expanding definition of authorship of the work of art. Artists often hire fabricators with specialized skills to realize their vision, pushing the definition of “work for hire” into the forefront and challenging outdated hierarchies of novelty. Yasmil Raymond will examine how these interactions between artists and fabricators propose a form of convivial creation and how their approach go beyond giving credit but affirming a politics of friendship.
From 2015 to 2019, Yasmil Raymond was Associate Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Before MoMA, she was the curator of Dia Art Foundation from 2009 until 2015.
