Willem de Rooij (*1969 in Beverwijk/NL) has been professor of fine art at the Städelschule since 2006. He examines the presence and effect of photographic and film images. With de Rooij, in his often extremely artificial, lavishly staged scenarios, it is not only what is represented that is important, but also the wider socio-political and (art) historical contexts. His work features in important collections and museums around the world.
The special edition, Campus, created by Professor Willem de Rooij is intended to provide the initial funding for an exchange project between the Städelschule and the Fine Arts Faculty at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana:
In Ghana’s hot climate, mango trees provide not only fruit, but also shelter. To teach or be taught in the shadow of a tree is a West African reality, as well as a pictorial cliché: the image of a class of young children and a teacher under a tree is used by many charitable organisations. Campus was shot on the grounds of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, in March 2014. The Kwame Nkrumah University is one of West Africa’s oldest and most esteemed institutions for higher education. The Fine Arts Faculty hosts over 200 students, many of whom have outstanding talent. It is the Städelschule’s objective to embark on an exchange with this university in order to expand our networks and gain greater knowledge of each other’s artistic programmes.
